So, you want to renovate your home? You’ve decided to change the bathrooms, install granite flooring, and put marble tabletops in the kitchen. However, it’s been a long time since your last home renovation, and you need a new contractor. You’ve been asking around, and you’ve heard several horror stories from friends and family about shoddy work, overextended budgets, substandard materials, extended timelines and so on. Even if you hire a contractor, how do you make sure that the contractor is reliable and trustworthy?
Once you’ve decided the scope of your project, there are a few steps you have to take to ensure the credentials, expertise, and technical knowledge of the contractor.
Projects that show structural damage, material damage, and other issues within three to five years usually demonstrate poor workmanship. Take the time to talk to the property owner and discuss the repairs done by contractor in response to complaints.
Most contractors are reliable and trustworthy. If you’ve done your research correctly, you should have no problems, but there are fly-by-night operators who will try to cheat you. To prevent this from happening, be careful of contractors who offer discounted raw materials from other construction sites.
Do not sign up with contractors who offer rock-bottom rates and who pressure to sign up with them by offering “amazing offers for today only.” Avoid contractors who ask for more than 10% upfront as a standard deposit and who do not have licenses and insurance. It’s difficult and expensive to get your money back after you’ve been cheated. Prevent this from happening by doing as much research as possible before hiring anyone to work on your home.
